With boating season starting, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office wants to make sure that the youngest sailors and swimmers stay safe.
Thanks to grants obtained last year and private donations, the Sheriff’s Office is going from school to school, teaching boating safety to Lake Havasu City third-graders.
We have created a program specifically tailored for third-graders, put in a format they can understand. We use a coloring work book to go over the good choices and bad choices boaters/swimmers can make in and on the water, instruct the students on how to make sure they use the proper safety equipment and answer questions. We want to reach every child in town, but right now this is a pilot program.
Sgt. Schuster said, an estimated 700 third-graders will go through the program running the final week of February and the first week of March. Even though this is targeted to third-graders, we are happy to talk to anyone that wants to learn boating safety and we would love to expand the program.
